Chronicle (2012) Review

Chronicle offers a unique take on the superhero genre brought to life by the director-screenwriter combination of Josh Trank and Max Landis, both making their feature film debuts.  The film centres around three high school students and their reactions to their newly acquired superpowers. Despite seemingly treading well versed territory, Chronicle manages to keep things fresh and exciting by avoiding the common clichés associated with the genre and tries to venture somewhere brand spanking new.

Tree of Life (2011) Review

Let me start of by saying this was my first Terence Malick film, for some reason or another I never got down to watching any of his other work. I had read a lot about Tree of Life before hand, so I knew what to expect. To say this film is ambitious does not do it justice. The only thing I’ve ever seen like it is 2001 Space Odyssey. In fact, its probably too ambitious for its own good. The premise of the film is relatively straightforward, but the way it is delivered to us makes the movie a cryptic, challenging, pretentious and bewildering experience.

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2011) Review

Another movie being overlooked thanks to a limited release is the horror comedy Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. In fact, limited release is a bit of an understatement as, apart from film festivals dating way back to January 2010, the film is yet to see the light of day in America; this despite already being released in Kazakhstan, Estonia, Russia and Germany amongst others. Strange stuff. Nonetheless, the film was a bit hit at film festivals and is currently scheduled for a September 2011 American release.

Super (2010) Review

Next up is James Gunn’s Super, probably my favourite and the most criminally underrated movie of 2010 (46% on Rotten Tomatoes?!). Since its only out on limited release not many people have seen it, so I’m going to try and keep this brief and spoiler free.

Game of Thrones Season 1

This is not a typical review but more my thoughts on the first season of HBO’s fantasy drama Game of Thrones.  When I first heard about Game of Thrones, I was excited. I don’t know why, but I was.  All I had seen were a few teaser images and I was already drooling. It was a dark, epic drama set in medieval times with gore, nudity and super natural elements. That sounds like every nerd’s dream. Everyone on the internet was talking about how epic and remarkable this new show was going to be. People’s minds were already half made up. I was pumped.

Portal 2 Review PS3

The first Portal hit us all like a bolt from the blue. Hidden away in Valve’s Orange Box along with classics like Half Life 2 and Team Fortress 2, many considered it to be something of an afterthought; a gimmicky puzzle game thrown in amongst heavyweight game franchises. However, the game surprised us all and it’s challenging puzzles, witty humour and cake related lies had us all wanting more.

Green Lantern (2011) Review

“In brightest day, in blackest zzzzzzz"

I'm going to start things off by reviewing Green Lantern because, unfortunately, it is the last movie I have had the displeasure of sitting through. Let’s rewind to several months ago. Ryan Reynolds, Mark Strong, Tim Robbins and director Martin Campbell (Goldeneye, Casino Royale) all come together. I was intrigued. Then, on October 21st 2010, IGN went and called Green Lantern "The New Star Wars". Yes, that actually happened ( http://movies.ign.com/articles/112/1129610p1.html). Well done Mr. Jim Vejvoda
